I’m in the either fortunate, or unfortunate (depending on your perspective 😂) position of being very busy with music, teaching and life. I also get tagged a lot on Facebook and can spend hours going back and forth trying to organise times, or explain the lessons etc. and it can be cumbersome and time consuming.
SO I’m always looking for new ways to streamline this process and maximise time. I decided to first explain my approaches and philosophies to lessons, how they work and hopefully answer some Frequently Asked Questions.

LESSONS WITH ME:
My name is Mike and I’ve been a musician and music teacher for about 20 years (maybe more…I’m scared to work it our! 😂). I play and teach the Drums, the Piano/Keyboards and Guitar. I teach all ages and abilities and have students from 6/7 up to 76! I teach in several local schools including Hythe Primary, Wildground Juniors, Marchwood Juniors, Calmore Juniors and Oakfield Primary. I have over 100 students a week!!
My philosophy on teaching is all about tailoring the lessons to the student and trying to find the best approaches and techniques for each individual; I believe that all students are unique and there’s no ‘One Fix’ for us all. My thinking is always: if a student doesn’t understand something I’m saying then it’s a failure of mine to describe it accurately NOT the fault of the student in not being able to understand it!
I’ve had students who are complete beginners and have taken them all the way to Grade 8 (I tend to use RSL Rockschool Exams). BUT I don’t specify that students MUST learn Grades, and if they just want to learns songs or for their own enjoyment then that’s also great with me!! A combination of both is, obviously, cool too!! 🤟

How Long Are The Lessons?
I now ONLY offer 30 minute lessons. This is to fit in all the students I get asked to teach. I used to do hourlong lessons and, to be honest, they’re only suitable for certain students and often by the 45 minute mark most people have already switched off. If, after working together for a while it seems 30 minutes isn’t enough we could maybe take a look at 1 hour/60 minute lessons.
How Much Are Lessons?
I charge a flat rate of £15 for a half hour lesson.
Where Are The Lessons?
I now exclusively teach from my house. We have a purpose built Garden Music Studio where I have many instruments for us to jam and focus on music and not distractions from a ‘house’ environment. If you are at all worried about this YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO SIT IN ON LESSONS!!! I honestly don’t mind, and it’s nice for you to see what we get up to! I even have a comfy chair!! 😃 I do this mainly because I was losing a lot of time going to and from lessons and the amount of time I spent driving all around the Waterside Area was really eating in to time I could be teaching.
*YES I do teach SOME students from home, and they are ones I have had for a LONG time and this is a ‘moving forward’ thing; I may end up even asking them to come here too. I’m putting this to be 100% honest and it not seem that I am dishonest.
